Oh Toronto!

Last month I drove to Toronto with some friends to play at the Dakota Tavern during CMW. When we pulled into town one of my fellow passengers (I’m going to keep him as anonymous as possible) let slip that, to put it mildly, he didn’t like Toronto. I’m going to have to be honest and admit that I don’t get it – I like Toronto. We’ve played about a half dozen shows there at a number of different venues, and I don’t think we’ve ever had a bad time.

Except for the time the bass amp crapped out halfway through song two at one of our CMW sets at The Hideout … or the time the drums didn’t show up at Mitzi’s Sister until very, very late and the crowd got a little impatient … or the time we drank too much before playing the Cameron House because we found out that the drummer we were traveling with liked, among other things, Nickleback …

Regardless! We’re happy to be going back this coming Friday April 20, because we’ll finally get to play at the Silver Dollar Room, one of the premier venues in the city. We’re opening the show for two great local bands, The Key Frames, and our good friend Lee Mellor.

The Key Frames have spent years honing their craft. They light up the dance floor with playful bluegrass-tinged ditties, reminiscent of “Blue Rodeo with a banjo.”

Lee Mellor is a fiery bearded troubador who ranked #3 singer-songwriter in a Montreal Mirror reader’s poll. He has been compared musically to Steve Earle and Tom Petty, and lyrically to the authors Ernest Hemingway and Timothy Findlay.

The Silver Dollar Room is located at 486 Spadina near College. The doors open at 9:00 pm and we’ll hit the stage at 9:30 pm.

See you in Toronto!

Let’s Take This Show on the Road

“So let’s take this show on the road, boys /
Let’s take this show on the road /
The city’s getting crowded and the weather’s getting cold /
And we ain’t getting anything but old”
Freeman Dre and the Kitchen Party

As tempting as Freeman Dre makes it sound to book a tour of Europe while on a drinking binge, I think for the time being we’ll keep things simple by driving (sober) to Ottawa, Sherbrooke, and Toronto.

Come see us in Ottawa this Thursday night at the Elmdale House Tavern. We’ll be opening for Still Winter Hills. The doors open at 9, and the show starts at 9:30.

A week later on Thursday April 5th we will be in Sherbrooke. It’s hard to believe that it’s only 2 hours away and yet we’ve never been. And somehow, among the multitudes of metal bands that seem to thrive in its music scene, we managed to find a roots rock band to play with (thank you Ziv for helping us out with that). If you have friends and family in Sherbrooke (because we don’t really have any, yet), please tell them about this show. We will be playing at Bar Le Magog on Dufferin Street, opening the night for Yan et Les Chevettes. Here’s a taste of what they can do:

On Friday April 20th we will make the trip to Toronto to open a show for our friend Lee Mellor at the Silver Dollar on Spadina. He hasn’t quite given up on music despite being a published writer (editor’s note: I had written “novelist”, but someone reminded me that Lee writes non-fiction. Sorry, Lee!). Good thing too. I’d be very upset if he stopped writing songs. Joining us on the bill will also be The Key Frames. I’ve heard good things about them and look forward to seeing their live show.

And in case you’re wondering what’s in store for us beyond April, you’ll just have to sit tight. Take us home, Dre …
