Nothing to do this weekend? Go see FFUD and the Wildwood Flowers

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Here are two shows on either end of the roots-rock spectrum that you should see.

Friday night – FFUD at Barfly

Not for people with sensitive hearing or who dread waking up with a ringing in their ears. FFUD plays rock and roll inspired by the likes of The Kinks, The Flaming Groovies, and Guided by Voices, and they play it loud … and that’s why we love ’em.

Mark Goodwin (who produced our record) and Steve Burliuk (who didn’t produce our record) play guitar and share the vocals. Our friends Louis Panneton (who helped engineer our record) on bass, and Luc Mantha (who played with us at the Montreal Folk Festival last summer) on drums, round out the line-up.

Saturday night – The Wildwood Flowers at Bistro de Paris

If you prefer something a little sweeter and a little more subdued, then it’s about time you see The Wildwood Flowers.This is classic country music in the spirit of the Carter Family at it’s absolute finest.

I first saw them perform at the Folk Festival last June and have been trying to book a show with them ever since … what’s that? Oh, it turns out we are playing a show with them at the end of March … more on that in the coming weeks I suppose.

Alexandra Ghezzi leads the way on the mandolin. Alexandra has got fantastic stage presence and has taught me a thing or two about banter … Supporting her on the harmonies (among the best in the entire city) are Elise Cormier and Sarah Morasse, who also plays the accordion. The rhythm is ably handled by Nathalie Sidaros on the upright bass, and Georges Plourde on acoustic guitar.

Showtime is 9:30 pm, and admission will cost you $5. Bistro de Paris is located at 4536 Saint-Denis. For more info click here.

Ottawa & Toronto: You’re Next

Our show this past Saturday at O Patro Vys was a success, from the first breath of Sarah Jane Scouten‘s opening set, to the final growl of our Steel Workers’ tribute in the encore. There are many people we would like to thank, but it’s late, and I’m tired, and I’m afraid I’d forget someone …

But briefly, thank you to O Patro Vys for hosting us, Boreale for sponsoring us, Ben Palmai for recording us, and CTV News, the Montreal Gazette, CJLO, and all of the media for promoting us and the show.

Thursday March 29th | Elmdale House Tavern | Ottawa

The Elmdale House Tavern is one of our favourite venues in all of Canada (at least in the cities and towns we’ve been to so far). Ottawa’s music scene is alive and well and the Elmdale is one of the reasons for its resurgence.

We will be sharing the bill with local band Still Winter Hills. Go check ’em out.

Friday April 20th | Silver Dollar | Toronto

It’s been nearly a year since we played in Toronto, and we’re happy to be returning to a venue that’s a little bigger and a little closer to downtown, the Silver Dollar Room on Spadina.

Even better than that, we get to share the stage again with our friend Lee Mellor. All signs point to this being a show not to be missed. So spread the word!
